Update #11 - March 20 - NACE Board Meeting and Annual Conference Update

In this week’s message we’d like to briefly recap where things are with the NACE and SSPC discussions and clarify a few questions that both organizations have been asked.

Now that the SSPC Board has unanimously voted in favor of the combination of SSPC and NACE, the next important milestone in this process is the NACE Board of Directors vote, which will take place on March 14th. If the NACE Board approves the proposed combination, the members of both organizations will have the opportunity to vote between April 3-17, 2020. Those who are members of both organizations will have the opportunity to vote twice, once for each organization.

In the meantime, the task group members are continuing to discuss the feedback they’ve been receiving from members to ensure all questions, concerns, and ideas are addressed and taken into consideration to the fullest extent possible. Members are encouraged to continue submitting questions online and to attend the four Town Hall meetings that NACE will be hosting at its annual conference (schedule listed below).

One question that we’ve received is whether “NewOrg” and “NewOrg Institute” would actually be the names of the two new organizations. The answer is “No”; those names are just temporary placeholders. No decision has been made with regard to any name change. If the decision is made to combine the organizations, a professional third party firm will help determine the names for the two new organizations and develop the branding.

Please note that should things move to a member vote and both SSPC’s and NACE’s members support the combination, most changes will not occur immediately. If SSPC’s and NACE’s members support the combination, we will move to combine and transition to the two new organizations with the new governance and membership structure by January 1, 2021. However, integrating the operations of the two organizations will extend well beyond January 1st of 2021. As the combined association integrates, there may be other changes made that reflect the best interests of the membership. Similar to the decisions made thus far, members (with the support of staff) will lead the discussions and decision making on other changes as it becomes appropriate to do so.

More insight into the discussions and member questions can be found in the video from last week’s town hall during SSPC’s Coatings+ conference which can be viewed here. You can also hear more about it from NACE CEO, Bob Chalker and SSPC Executive Director, Bill Worms in a podcast interview with Carboline which can be heard here.
