This methodology uses a new steel plate or prefabricated structural component laid on top of the existing steel plate to be repaired. An elastomer core is used to bond the new plate/component and the existing steel plate to form a steel sandwich plate structure, thereby repairing the existing steel substrate without it being cut and replaced. This method is intended to restore the strength of the damaged structural members, or to reinforce existing structures.

Extensive work has been conducted over many years to understand various fundamental and applied aspects of these phenomena. Experiences in refinery wet H₂S operations have directed particular attention to understanding SOHIC and the various metallurgical and environmental parameters that govern its occurrence.

Scope

This standard was prepared to provide a test method for consistent evaluation of pipeline and pressure vessel steels to SOHIC caused by hydrogen absorption from aqueous sulfide corrosion. The test conditions are not designed to simulate any specific service environment. The test is intended to evaluate resistance to SOHIC only, and not to other adverse effects of sour environments such as sulfide stress cracking (SSC), pitting, or mass loss from corrosion.

Steel components in refineries and petrochemical plants are exposed to conditions of temperatures higher than 200°C with high pressures of hydrogen. Such conditions avail the driving force needed for the hydrogen to dissociate and penetrate the steel surface. Once the atomic or nascent hydrogen is within the steel microstructure, it can react with the carbon present, usually in carbides, to form methane gas within the steel structure as suggested by the below reactions:

where α refers to ferrite.
