About Standards

AMPP Standards

AMPP Standards drive our industry

Contribute, learn, and influence global industry consensus standards

Our standards enable commerce, facilitate agreement between buyers and sellers, assist in meeting regulatory requirements, and define methods of testing. AMPP corrosion and coatings standards fill the standardization needs of industries, with a focus on the impact of emerging technologies, new materials and capabilities, and regulatory requirements.

Standards Committees (SCs) provide professionals with a platform for sharing subject matter expertise, expanding and enhancing their professional footprint, and making an impact on technology and industry. AMPP SCs are responsible for the generation, publishing, and maintenance of all AMPP products that require a consensus-driven process.

AMPP Guide 21569-2024

Announcing the publication of AMPP Guide 21569-2024, Guidance on Implementing Corrosion Control Methodologies to Align with New PHMSA Regulatory Procedures

In August 2022, PHMSA revised the Federal Pipeline Safety Regulations to improve the safety of onshore gas transmission pipelines (PHMSA Regulation Identifier Number (RIN) 2137-AF39 – Pipeline Safety: Safety of Gas Transmission Pipelines: Repair Criteria, Integrity Management Improvement, Cathodic Protection, Management of Change, and Other Related Amendments). The regulation is expected to reduce the frequency and consequences of failures and incidents involving onshore gas natural gas transmission pipelines through early detection of threats to pipeline integrity, including those resulting from corrosion or extreme weather events. Additionally, revisions to the regulation address several other areas, including managing change processes, corrosion control, and criteria to repair pipelines.

AMPP Guide 21569 will assist pipeline operations with implementing corrosion control methodology required by the regulation. This document provides industry consensus on how to implement the new regulations. In addition to corrosion control, this guide addresses some operations, maintenance, and integrity management sections of the new regulation. Since operating companies need to incorporate the RIN 2 requirements into systems, processes, and procedures, this guide recommends procedures to comply with the new corrosion requirements using proven tools and techniques to monitor and protect these gas pipelines safely.

New AMPP Publications Style Manual:Standards - First Edition

The AMPP Publications Style Manual: Standards, First Edition will replace the NACE Publications Style Manual and the SSPC Standards Development Manual previously used for the development of AMPP/NACE/SSPC Standards documents. This new manual contains style guidelines for AMPP Standards Committee (SC) publications, whether printed or electronic, including word usage, punctuation, spelling, typography, arrangement, layout, format, and organization.

As of January 1, 2024, all AMPP Standards documents not already in balloting will follow the style and format of the new AMPP Publications Style Manual: Standards. The Staff Liaisons will assist with converting any in-progress draft to the new draft template when drafts are submitted to editing for pre-ballot review.

The time a volunteer spends on standards activities depends upon the level of involvement but typically averages between 10 – 30 hours per year.

You may join a Standards Committee (SC) from our website. You must have an active AMPP profile including your company/organization (or you can create an AMPP profile when prompted). Association membership is not required but highly encouraged. Open the dropdown next to Standards on the menu bar, select the “Join A Standards Committee” option to join one or more SCs as an Observer. Identification of your interest classification as Producer, User, or General Interest is required. If you need assistance, please contact Customer Support.

Any individual or organization may identify the need for a new standard by completing a Project Request Form (more information here) and email the completed form to standards@ampp.org. If you need assistance with completion of the form, standards staff will be happy to assist you.

Standards Committees may call for volunteers by notification to SC members for projects. In addition, you may email your request to standards@ampp.org. A Staff Liaison will respond to assist you with your request.

Association membership is not required but highly encouraged.

You can message any committee participants directly through the committee workspace members or contact that committee’s Staff Liaison.

All AMPP, NACE, and SSPC standards, including printed and downloaded documents, are internationally copyright-protected and may only be accessed by a single user. Multiple users must obtain a network license agreement from AMPP.

For more information about the network license agreement please contact copyright@ampp.org.

AMPP does not publish the individual names of contributors to our standards. However, we are very appreciative of the time and effort that our volunteers give toward the development of AMPP’s international standards. AMPP hosts an awards ceremony every year at its annual conference.

Other AMPP standards awards include:

  • Certificate of Participation - Awarded to project team participants determined by the DPM. The DPM may provide a list to the Staff Liaison for distribution
  • Certificate of Accomplishment - Awarded to the DPM with a complimentary copy of the standard in recognition of their leadership and project management.
  • Certificate of Appreciation - Awarded to SC officers and outstanding project team contributors as determined by the SPC or SC Chair, with AMPP custom award trophies.
