FEB 20 JOINT DINNER MEETING WITH AWS
Posted on 11/6/2017

(Posted 11-06-2017 Charlie Speed)

NACE New Orleans - Joint Evening Meeting with American Welding Society (AWS)

LOCATION:  Landmark Hotel

DATE:  3rd Tuesday. February 20, 2018  (Normal AWS meeting date- NACE normally meets on 4th Monday but will move to AWS schedule)

TIME:  6;30 pm

TOPIC:  Cathodic Protection To Control Tank Well Cracking

SPEAKER:  Bob Bartlett, PE - Bartlett Engineering

COST:  This is a free event.  NACE INTERNATIONAL New Orleans, The Corrosion Society is sponsoring this event. NACE members please RSVP by e-mailing CharlieFSpeed@gmail.com

Abstract:  When faced with numerous weld cracks on new million gallon tanks, a tank owner was concerned that the cause was defective welding or defective internal coating.  Investigation revealed that the cracking was a form of stress corrosion cracking caused by the contents.  Not willing to accept that those tanks would continue to crack for the rest of their usable lives, Bartlett Engineering explored the use of cathodic protection for this application.

This presentation will follow this case history as a means of explaining how the locations of the cracking suggested its cause, how the microscopic characteristics of the cracking was used to determine its mechanism, the NDE methods used to monitor the joints, the types of tests done to evaluate the effectiveness of different preventive measures, and the ultimate plan to reduce the susceptibility to cracking -- with a little bit of electrochemistry thrown in for good measure.

Mr. Bartlett is an lively and entertaining presenter that is able to convey otherwise complicated concepts in a very easily understood manner.

ABSTRACT:  Reservoir engineers cannot capture full value from waterflood projects on their own.  Cross-functional participation from earth sciences, production, drilling, completions, and facility engineering, and operational groups is required to get full value from waterfloods.  Waterflood design and operational case histories of cross-functional collaboration are provided that have improved life cycle costs and increased recovery for onshore and offshore waterfloods.   The role that water quality, surveillance, reservoir processing rates, and layered reservoir management has on waterflood oil recovery and life cycle costs will be clarified.  Techniques to get better performance out of your waterflood will be shared.

BIOGRAPHY:  Scot Buell has worked globally for 36 years as a petroleum engineer. He was a 2005-2006 SPE Distinguished Lecturer, is the author of 12 SPE papers, served as an SPE technical editor for 20 years, and has served as an SPE section Chairman, Forum Chairman, and Applied Technology Workshop Chairman.  He has worked as an expert in the design of new waterfloods and the operation of existing waterflood projects in Asia, North America, Europe, and Africa.  He provided technical leadership for 30 waterflooded reservoirs offshore West Africa for nine years. He currently serves as a corporate reserves auditor specializing in waterflood and EOR reserve estimates.  He also serves as the principal researcher for thermal horizontal wells and thermal subsurface integrity management for Chevron Energy Technology Research Company.  He holds a BS and MS in Petroleum Engineering and MS in Petroleum Economics, all from Colorado School of Mines.
