Shipboard Corrosion Assessment Technician (S-CAT)

The Shipboard Corrosion Assessment Training Technician Certification encompasses a knowledge of coatings, corrosion, and corrosion control assessing the condition of tanks and other military ship structures, to help maintain full operational status.

The Shipboard Corrosion Assessment Training course provides a foundation of coatings, corrosion, and corrosion control knowledge related to determining the condition of ships, tanks, and related waterborne structures. It provides a knowledge base of required actions to effectively maintain the structure in fully operational status. The course equips the naval assessor with practical guidelines for surveying and evaluating the condition of the protective coating system on specific areas of U.S. Navy vessels.

Classroom instruction is comprised of lectures, discussions, and assessments.

Learning objectives

  • Perform visual assessments for all ship areas.
  • Describe the various testing methods used during the evaluation.
  • Determine corrosion control methods:
    • Design
    • Inhibitors
    • Protective coatings
    • Cathodic protection
    • Corrosion resistant materials
    • Alteration of environment
  • Utilize evaluation tools and equipment, such as a pit gauge and DFT gauge.
  • Evaluate a corrosion protection system.
  • Plan maintenance and manage inspection results in a Corrosion Control Information Management System (CCIMS).
  • Conduct a tank inspection using the Corrosion Control Assessment Maintenance Manual (CCAM).
  • Perform total tank scoring.
  • Perform adhesion testing.

Course completion and end of course exam

Successful completion of the course is required to earn a certificate of course completion. Requirements are specific to each course and may include a combination of attendance, daily assessments, activities, quizzes, or knowledge checks.

A practical exam is administered at the end of the course. Successful completion of the exam is required to earn a certificate of completion.

Certification exams

Certification requirements include an exam delivered via computer-based testing (CBT).

The multiple-choice CBT exam is purchased and scheduled separately from the course and delivered via Pearson VUE. Any Exam retake will incur additional cost to the applicant.

Renewal requirements

An approved recertification application is required every 3 years. The work experience requirement for renewals for all certifications is one and half (1.5) years for the most recent three (3) year period. Additionally, some certifications have other requirements related to responsibility in charge.

As you prepare for renewal, please visit My Certification Portal to log and manage your work experience and Professional Development Hours (PDH's) needed. Your work experience and PDH's will be submitted as part of your renewal application but you can input PDH's at any time. Certification holders are required to pay a non-refundable processing fee for renewal.
