This certification is for individuals who are experienced, knowledgeable and capable of performing work at an advanced level in both the theory and practice of corrosion prevention and control in the protective coatings field.

The Protective Coating Specialist covers areas including but not limited to:

  • Creating Paint Maintenance Programs
  • Conducting Site Surveys
  • Reviewing Bidders Lists
  • Understanding of appropriate safety, environment and health issues

How to achieve certification

The steps to certification can be taken in any order

Primary certification path

  1. Work experience and education requirements

    8 years of verifiable protective coatings-related work experience

    One of the following:

    • i. Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Sciences or Engineering
    • ii. Protective Coating Technician Certification
    • iii. CIP Peer Certification (Coating Inspector Program Level 3)
    • iv. Frosio Coating Inspector Level III
    • v. SSPC Protective Coating Specialist
  2. Certification, course, and application requirements

    Approved Protective Coatings Specialist Application

    Successful completion of the Ethics for the Corrosion Professional course or an equivalent training

  3. Core exam requirements

    Certification Exam – Protective Coating Specialist Exam

    Note: This exam is available on Computer Based Testing (CBT) at Pearson Virtual University Experience (VUE)

Certification candidates have four (4) years to complete all requirements, including a successful completion of the exam, and an approved application with the required work experience and education requirements.

Certification candidates have four (4) years to complete all requirements, including a successful completion of the exam, and an approved application with the required work experience and education requirements.

Renewal requirements

An approved recertification application is required every 3 years. The work experience requirement for renewals for all certifications is one and half (1.5) years for the most recent three (3) year period. Additionally, some certifications have other requirements related to responsibility in charge.

As you prepare for renewal, please visit My Certification Portal to log and manage your work experience and Professional Development Hours (PDH's) needed. Your work experience and PDH's will be submitted as part of your renewal application but you can input PDH's at any time. Certification holders are required to pay a non-refundable processing fee for renewal.
