Education

4 Year Diploma
OR
HS Diploma with an additional 10 years’ work experience

3 references from past supervisor, current or former colleague, personal friend (non-relative)

Course Level Mastery

Must have demonstrated mastery (or be willing to demonstrate mastery) of the exam in the class for which application to teach is being submitted

Additional

  • A background check will be performed on all candidates
  • Preference will be given to applicants with technical expertise and prior instructor experience
  • Must be an AMPP member in good standing

Coating Inspector Program (CIP)

CIP Level 1 & 2

  • CIP Level 3 Peer Review Certification (current certification or recertification earned within the last 10 years)
  • 10 years’ coating inspector experience

CIP Nuclear

  • CIP Level 3 Peer Review Certification (current certification or recertification earned within the last 10 years)
  • 10 years’ coating inspection experience
  • 2 years’ experience in nuclear inspection

CIP Bridge

Concrete Coating Basics eCourse (CCB)

Must meet one of the following work experience and educational requirements:
2 years of college or technical school (copy of diploma or transcript required) and 2 years (2000 Hours) of documented and verified* work experience in the concrete industry.
OR
High school or equivalent (copy of diploma or certificate required) and 3 years (3000 Hours) of documented and verified* work experience in coating concrete.
OR
4 years (4000 Hours) of verified* field work experience in coating concrete.

Fieldwork experience must be in one of the following areas:

  • Coating inspection of concrete
  • Surface Preparation and Application of concrete
  • Manager of Concrete Project
  • Coating Specifier
  • Coating Concrete Technical Representative
  • Concrete Supplier

NAVSEA Basic Paint Inspector (NBPI)

  • 4 years work experience within past 6 years with marine, navy, or other critical immersion services (e.g., inspection/auditing; failure analysis; condition surveys; specification preparation)

Coast Guard Basic Paint Inspector Course (COAST GUARD)

  • 4 years experience within past 6 years with marine, coast guard or other critical immersion services (e.g., inspection/auditing; failure analysis; condition surveys; specification preparation)

Fireproofing Inspector eCourse (FIRE INSP)

5 years work experience as a:

  1. Coating contractor project manager or foreman or lead applicator on industrial fireproofing projects
  2. Fireproofing material supplier technical representative from a leading fireproofing material supplier (e.g. Carboline, PPG, International, Sherwin Williams, Hempel)
  3. Coating inspector of thin and thick film intumescent and cementitious fireproofing materials on industrial structures
  4. Possess current certification in one of the following:
    • PCI
    • AMPP CIP
    • Frosio Level 2 Certification

Pipeline Coating Inspector eCourse (PIPE INSP)

5 years work experience as a:

  1. Coating contractor project manager or foreman or lead applicator on pipeline projects
  2. Coating inspector on a pipeline project

Possess one of the following current certifications:

  • PCI
  • AMPP CIP
  • Frosio Level 2 Certification

Thermal Spray Inspector Training (THERMAL INSP)

  • Minimum 4 years experience with thermal spraying. Minimum level 1 coating inspector certification

Craftworker

Abrasive Blaster Certification (C7)

  • 5 years in the Industrial Protective Coatings Industry
  • Must have been in the industry working on a full-time basis for 1 year prior to being a proctor OR have at least 10 years field experience with blasting
  • have hands-on knowledge of the tools (dry abrasive blast cleaning systems)
  • Hold one or more of the following certifications:
    • AMPP PCI II
    • AMPP CIP Level II
    • Frosio Level II
    • CAS Full Status – Level II

Waterjetting Program (C13)

  • 4 years work experience with industrial coatings operations
  • 4 years hands-on knowledge of the tools (waterjetting cleaning systems)

Spray Application Certification (C12)

  • 5 years work experience in the Industrial Protective Coatings Industry
  • Must have been in the industry working on a full-time basis for 1 year prior to being a proctor
  • or minimum 10 years field experience with spray painting operations have hands-on knowledge of the tools (airless and conventional spray-painting equipment)
  • Hold one or more of the following certifications:
    • AMPP PCI II
    • AMPP CIP Level II
    • Frosio Level II
    • CAS Full Status – Level II

Thermal Spray Applicator Training (THERMAL APP)

  • 4 years experience with thermal spraying

Aerospace Coating Application Specialist Certification Program (ACAS)

  • 5 years work experience in the Aerospace Coatings Industry with documented field experience
  • Must be currently active in the industry (within past 12 months) or have at least 10 years experience with surface preparation and painting operations
  • Must have hands-on knowledge of the tools. (surface preparation; spray application systems; coating materials)

Surface Preparation and Paint Application for Shipboard Organizational Level Corrosion Control (SHIPBOARD)

  • 4 years work experience within the past 6 years with hand and power tool surface preparation methods and brush and roller coating application methods in the following environments: marine, navy or other critical immersion services (e.g., inspection/auditing; failure analysis; condition surveys; specification preparation) equipment
  • Have 4 years hands-on knowledge of the tools (hand/power and brush/roller equipment)

Surface Preparation and Paint Application for Power Tool Cleaning Operators and Brush and Roll Paint Applicators (C6)

  • 4 years experience within past 6 years with hand and power tool surface preparation methods and brush and roller coating application methods
  • Have 4 years hands-on knowledge of the tools (hand/power and brush/roller equipment)

Aerospace Engineer Coating Application Training (AERO ENG)

  • 5 years work experience in coatings and corrosion experience directly related to the course material. This includes 5 years working directly in a corrosion related field as a primary, not secondary, career field as a corrosion engineer or corrosion prevention and control maintainer
  • Experience not directly related to corrosion prevention and control via corrosion removal, surface preparation, coating application, and quality control inspections after application of coatings will not be considered

Aerospace Maintainer Coating Application Training (AERO MAIN)

  • 5 years work experience in coatings and corrosion experience directly related to the course material. This includes 5 years working directly in a corrosion related field as a primary, not secondary, career field as a corrosion engineer or corrosion prevention and control maintainer
  • Experience not directly related to corrosion prevention and control via corrosion removal, surface preparation, coating application, and quality control inspections after application of coatings will not be considered

Concrete Coating Application Specialist (CCAS)

  • 5 years work experience directly related to surface preparation of concrete
  • Abrasive blasting experience directly relating to concrete is preferred
  • Must be able to perform concrete moisture testing commonly performed by concrete coating applicators
  • 5 years coating application work experience
  • Must be able to use an airless sprayer
  • (2) of those years should be direct application of coatings on concrete
  • Concrete coating inspection experience not necessary but preferred

Ground Vehicle Corrosion / Protective Coatings (GROUND VEH)

  • 4 years experience with army depot corrosion/coatings maintenance (e.g., inspection/auditing; failure analysis; condition surveys; specification preparation; surface preparation; coating application)

Instructor frequently asked questions

How often does an instructor need to teach?
A minimum of twice per year.

I do not have the certification, but I have education and work experience in lieu, can I apply?
Yes; however, you will need to obtain the necessary certification(s). We are able to provide assistance.

Is teaching experience required?
Teaching experience is not required, but highly recommended.

How often are interviews held, and are there any alternatives that do not require travel?
Currently, interviews are held 1-3 times per year. At this time we do not have an alternative to the in- person interview; however, we are currently researching alternative options.

Do you have full time instructors?
No, our instructors are contracted with AMPP.

I haven’t been in the industry in over a decade, can I still apply?
Yes, however, we encourage candidates to have continued professional development.

How rigorous is the instructor training?
Training includes, but not limited to; online introduction course and in class training with lead instructor mentoring during a number of courses. AMPP, also, offers training for all instructors every three years.

What is the expected time from application submission to approval as an instructor?
This can vary, dependent upon factors such as time it takes candidate to submit all required application documents and candidates availability to interview in coordinated location.

I have not taken the course for which I am applying to teach, but I have the necessary certifications, do I need to take the course before applying?
No, you do not need to take the course, prior to becoming an instructor. If contracted, you will be required to take the exam during your training.

Do I need to know my exam scores for the course I am applying to teach?
No, Instructor Relations Coordinator can gather those details from our database, along with certification and membership details.

Can you use my work experience and references that were submitted for certification renewal?
Unfortunately, no. Please send current resume, references and supplemental documents, if any, 

Why do I need to supply my social security number?
Background checks are conducted on all instructor candidates. Your written consent will be requested prior to screening.
