Course - ACA Corrosion & Protection of Concrete Structures & Buildings

This course is held in Partnership with The Australasian Corrosion Association and provides a solid foundation of knowledge about the corrosion, repair and protection of reinforced concrete together with some discussion about the prevention of reinforced concrete corrosion and deterioration. NACE is recognized as an Authorized Provider of Continuing Education Units by the International Association for Continuing Education and Training (IACET). To receive CEUs, participants are required to be engaged in the entire course and successfully pass the final exam. At the conclusion of the course you will be asked to complete a course evaluation.

  • Characteristics of Cement and Concrete
  • Concrete Deterioration Mechanisms (cracking, water penetrability, chemical/biological/mechanical/structural/fire damaged deterioration)
  • Corrosion of Steel in Concrete (electrochemistry, corrosion initiation, corrosion propagation)
  • Assessment & Diagnosis of Concrete (condition survey, on-site measurement methods, on-site sampling, laboratory methods, concrete quality indication)
  • Repair & Protection of Concrete (crack repair, patch repair, shotcrete/gunite, inhibitors, coatings & penetrants)
  • Cathodic Protection (CP) of Reinforced Concrete (impressed current, galvanic/sacrificial, hybrid system, criteria, selection & design, monitoring, systems operation)
  • Further Electrochemical Methods (chloride extraction and realkalisation)
  • Preventative measures for new concrete (chloride/carbonation resistance, admixtures, coatings & penentrants, alternate reinforcements, cathodic prevention, permanent corrosion monitoring)
