EN Engineering Lands PSM Refinery Projects

2015-09-01

(Warrenville, IL) EN Engineering, a leading design engineering firm, is providing Process Safety Management (PSM) services at two refineries within the Refinery Division and Terminal Division of one of the Midwest’s largest petroleum companies. As part of the extensive project, the firm is updating all of the information required in accordance with the Process Safety Management of Highly Hazardous Chemicals standard (OSHA 29 CFR 1910.119).

The OSHA standard outlines requirements for the management of hazards associated with processes using highly hazardous chemicals. It establishes a comprehensive management program that integrates technologies, procedures, and management practices. “This is critical because process safety information has to be updated prior to a Process Hazard Analysis that is required every five years,” stated Gary Blevins, Vice President and Senior Project Manager. “Within the Refinery Division, we have 15 staff members involved in redlining drawings and updating equipment files, both print and electronic, to include vendor information as well as the design and technology information the standard requires.”

The Terminal Division project also includes PSM compliance work. “We have three teams of engineers scheduled to complete 80 to 90 terminal evaluations over a 5-year period. They walk through the P&ID drawings, identify the applicable equipment, gather and develop the relevant information, and document and submit the information into the Equipment Management System,” Blevins explained. “This is a large project that is expected to extend over the next three years.”

EN Engineering’s Process Safety Management Group works with major clients to develop, implement, evaluate, and optimize their PSM programs and facilitate compliance with OSHA and EPA regulatory requirements. They specialize in helping ensure safe and efficient operation of refineries, chemical facilities, liquid storage terminals, and gas processing facilities
