Corrosion Technology Week Draws Crowd
Corrosion Technology Week (CTW) 2006, sponsored by NACE's Technical Coordination Committee (TCC), attracted 480 registrants to Orlando, Florida, for technical committee meetings, networking, and special events. At this annual workweek for the technical committees, attendees participated in 24 technical information exchanges (TIEs), 55 task group (standards and technical committee reports) meetings, and 15 administrative committee meetings (including Specific Technology Group [STG] and NACE administrative committee meetings). State-of-the-art sessions on "Naphthenic Acid Corrosion in the Refining Industry" and "Lessons Learned from RBI Implementation" were presented by TEG 206X, which sponsors these sessions annually. For the third year in a row, NACE STG 34 on Petroleum Refining and Gas Processing has coordinated with the American Petroleum Institute (API) Corrosion and Materials Committee and its subcommittees to schedule meetings for committees pertaining to the refining industry within both API and NACE to minimize travel and time away from business for members. Nine API committees met at CTW/2006 as part of this effort. Dan Dunmire, Special Assistant to the Department of Defense (DoD) Office of Corrosion Policy & Oversight, delivered a keynote presentation on new regulations and requirements for corrosion within the DoD. Dunmire also presented at the Technical Coordination Committee (TCC) meeting and meetings of STGs 35 (Pipelines, Tanks, and Well Casings) and 62 (Corrosion Monitoring and Measurement—Science and Engineering Applications).
During the keynote hour, NACE Foundation President Elaine Bowman presented information on the Foundationís planned activities at CORROSION/2007 in Nashville, Tennessee. Oliver Moghissi of CC Technologies (Dublin, Ohio) welcomed attendees to the Opening Reception sponsored by CC Technologies immediately following the keynote presentations. Tuesday evening a Rap & Rye event, sponsored by Carboline and consisting of mini-brainstorming sessions related to the coatings industry, was conducted by TEG 192X (Coating Industry Problems Confronting Owners and Contractors), and emceed by Lou Franks, Coatings Pro publisher. The STG 35 Steering Committee met for a brainstorming session on pipeline topics, discussing needed NACE products and services for pipeline integrity and corrosion control.
At Thursday's TCC meeting, Hira Ahluwalia (Material Selection Resources, Pennington, New Jersey) W.B.A. and (Sandy) Sharp (Sharp Consultant, Columbia, MD) presented the Cost of Corrosion Gap Analysis and Report contracted by the TCC and Technical and Research Activities Committee (TRAC), and a proposal for the path forward, providing thought-provoking information for further consideration and use by NACE. Drawings conducted during the week in the exhibit area netted prizes for eight lucky recipients, including two free CORROSION/2007 registrations. Corrosion Technology Week 2007 will be at the Hyatt Regency in downtown
Houston. |
