Bridge Painting Best Practices Forum
Tuesday, March 13, 2007
8 to 10:30 a.m.
This two-part forum opens with presentations on topics of importance across the industry and concludes with a bridge owner's panel discussion.
Presentation Topics
Four individuals will present topics of interest to a broad base of attendees. Each presentation (approximately 15 minutes long) also provides time for 5 minutes of questions and answers or discussion.
- Bridge Painting Inspection: The 13 Areas Not to Miss
Gary Tinklenberg and Tim Race, CCC & L
Don't miss this straightforward approach to ensure important points aren't overlooked during any bridge inspection.
- Chloride RemediationThe 800-Pound Gorilla Under the Bridge
Doug Hedrick, PE, Ohio Turnpike Commission
For years owners have wrestled with the question of whether chloride contamination is a problem during the blasting and repainting of bridges and other steel structures. The two main transportation agencies in Ohio take a different view of this unique problem. The Ohio Turnpike Commission shares its perspective and sheds new light on practices used by the Ohio Department of Transportation and other state agencies.
- Metalizing the Rainbow Bridge
Paul Forte, PE, Greenman-Pedersen, Inc.
Robert Koert, Construction Manager Niagara Falls Bridge Commission
An international bridge structure, metalized between the United States and Canada in 2002 and 2003, had unique project requirements, with issues related to: metalizing in winter, logistical considerations, and the complexities of working on the international border. This presentation concludes with a discussion of in-service conditions and the long-term viability of metalizing other major bridge structures of this type.
- The Challenges of Bridge Painting in New York City
Ronald F. Rauch, PE, New York City Department of Transportation
In the business of bridge painting, processes such as containment, environmental monitoring, surface preparation, and application have become familiar, if not routine. But for many projectsin New York and elsewherethese are lesser concerns. This presentation addresses many challenges faced each day: traffic constraints, train service on or adjacent to structures, coast guard requirements, noise issues, community relations, interagency coordination and more. Discuss these challenges and ways to deal with or streamline coordination and relationships between stakeholders and agencies to successfully manage these "painting" projects.
Owners Forum Panel Discussion
This one-hour panel discussion encourages trading ideas and sharing "lessons learned" from owners across a wide range of organizations.
Approximately six agencies (owners) will introduce themselves and provide a few slides and brief summaries of their bridge painting programs: their dollar value, the number of bridges they own, how many they re-paint or maintain each year, and their implementation process (using consultants or in-house staff).
Owners who have been invited to present include:
- Kamal Kishore, PE, New York City Department of Transportation*
- Ronald F. Rauch, PE , New York City Department of Transportation *
- Robert Koert, Niagara Falls Bridge Commission*
- Dennis (Rocky) Dellarocca, Golden Gate Bridge Transportation Authority*
- Maxine Jacoby, Texas Department of Transportation*
- Paul Vinik, Florida Department of Transportation
- Wayne Seiger, Tennessee Department of Transportation
- Greta Smith, Kentucky Transportation Cabinet
- Michael Leote, Triborough Bridge and Tunnel Authority
- Dan Castrigano, PE, Ohio Turnpike Commission
Panel members will be asked to describe issues they encounter on a typical bridge painting project and how they deal with them in various parts of the country. Audience participation is encouraged.
