Why aren't my certifications listed on my membership card?

  • NACE no longer prints certifications on membership cards. Individual cards will be distributed for certifications earned. If you have questions about certification cards, please , or phone +1 281-228-6211.

Which NACE Certifications offer a Parallel Path option?

Once I have successfully completed a course, how long do I have to apply it toward a certification?

  • Five years

If I choose the Parallel Path option, do I still need to meet the work requirements?

  • Yes, all work requirements must be met for each certification.

How much work experience in the field of corrosion is required?

  • Work experience differs for each certification. Please see the individual certification description for specific work requirements.

When I submit my application for a higher category do I have to pay the application processing fee?

  • Yes, processing fees are payable for each application submitted.

What is the difference between "acceptable work experience" and "acceptable work experience in responsible charge"?

  • "Acceptable work experience" and "acceptable work experience in responsible charge" both refer to documented work experience in the field of corrosion which includes: (a) the investigation of corrosion causes and mechanisms, (b) the investigation, design and implementation of corrosion control procedures, or (c) the teaching of corrosion related science.

  • However, "acceptable work experience in responsible charge" should be at a level of responsibility requiring initiative, technical ability, and independent judgment.

How is work experience documented?

  • Special reference forms are included with the application.

Are there any alternatives to actual "work experience" or "work experience in responsible charge"?

  • There are no alternatives to "work experience" or "work experience in responsible charge."

Are examination results confidential?

  • Yes, all examination results are held in confidence.

Do I have to wait until all my application materials are received and evaluated before I take an open-book examination?

  • Yes, applicants are only eligible to schedule an open-book exam after they have received notification of the Application Review Board's approval from NACE.

Are there any time constraints to completion of certification?

  • Applicants have one year from the time their application is approved in which to attempt the examination.

What is involved in recertification/renewal?

  • Recertification involves documentation of work experience and professional development. Details regarding recertification/renewal will automatically be sent to those holding certification.

What is the NACE International Attestation?

  • The Attestation is a document that attests to an individual?s knowledge that he/she understands the privileges and responsibilities which come along with NACE International certification. By signing the Attestation an individual agrees to adhere to certain standards and abide by certain work ethics. Failure to comply with the Attestation could result in disciplinary action.

How do I access grades via the NACE Web site?

  • Click here to go to the "Individual Student Grade by Class" page on our Web site. This will bring up a screen with three fields to enter data. The first field is a drop down menu.

  • Locate the course code (for example 03C44111) and click on it. Then tab down to the next box and enter the Student ID. Remember to enter the dash and last two digits also (i.e. 123456-00). Then enter the Password that the student filled in on their test form and click on "Search."

When I take my generalist certification examination, will I receive a grade?

  • No, only pass/fail information is given to the candidate.

Can I use my work docs that I previously turned in?

  • Yes, if it is used within one year.

Do I have to renew my Certification?

  • All certifications renew every three years. Click here to view on the online recertification application.

Do I have to pay a fee to renew?

  • No, Annual Maintenance Fees have been discontinued.

How long can my file stay open once I have turned the paperwork in?

  • Files can remain open for two years with no activity. Files older than two years with no activity will be closed.

What happens if I do not renew?

  • NACE allows a three month grace period after your certification expiration date before your record is marked as "inactive". You have up to five years to reinstate your certification and pay all fees in arrears. Any certification lapsed for more than five years will NOT be able to be reinstated and will require starting the program over from the beginning.
