This paper deals with using the law of Arrhenius for accelerated testing of the life-time/chemical resistance of various sealing materials belonging to the group of thermoplastic polyurethanes (TPU); hydrogenated nitrile rubbers (HNBR); and fluoroelastomers (FKM, AFLAS), in various drilling and completion fluids. The investigations were carried out in a temperature range from 70°C to 180°C over a period of up to 2000 hours. The compatibility/chemical resistance was characterized using different methods, which were swelling and hardness tests, tensile testing and measurement of tear strength. These methods are used to define suitable failure criterions for the materials in the fluids. Failure can be caused by physical effects, which are mainly volume change and change of hardness, and chemical degradation or deterioration. These failure criterions are the basis for the life-time prediction with the law of Arrhenius.
