Test for Corrosion Under Insulation Presented by: Dean Cox, Industrial Insulation Group LLC Do installed thermal insulation materials cause stress corrosion cracking (SCC) of Austenitic Stainless Steel or corrosion under insulation (CUI) of carbon steel? These questions have been studied by NACE and by ASTM for several years. ASTM Committee C16 on Thermal Insulation has developed a consensus accepted, inter-laboratory compared test method that accurately defines the amount of CUI that can be expected from the thermal insulation. Various ASTM Material Standards are beginning to reference this new test and the maximum expected results. This presentation will show actual test results on many thermal insulation materials used throughout the Gulf Coast and the US.
